Sí: el serbio es la única lengua europea importante escrita oficialmente en dos alfabetos. El alfabeto cirílico vukovica de 30 letras (una reforma fonémica uno a uno de Vuk Karadžić en el siglo XIX) es la escritura constitucional de las instituciones; el alfabeto latino de Gaj, idéntico al croata, se usa mucho en la edición, los negocios y en internet. La mayoría de los serbios leen ambos con fluidez.
El serbio tiene siete casos, tres géneros y verbos en pares de aspecto perfectivo/imperfectivo. Conserva un sistema de acento tonal de cuatro tipos (ascendente breve, descendente breve, ascendente largo y descendente largo), que normalmente solo se marca en los diccionarios. El serbio usa de forma característica la pronunciación ekavia (mleko «leche») en gran parte de Serbia, mientras que Bosnia y Montenegro comparten la ijekavia (mlijeko) del croata.
