El húngaro es categoría IV del FSI: tiene más de 18 casos, armonía vocálica (las vocales posteriores y anteriores no se mezclan libremente dentro de una palabra), conjugaciones definida e indefinida en los verbos y una morfología aglutinante que encadena sufijos sobre la raíz. El orden de palabras es flexible y marca el foco más que la función gramatical. Lo bueno: la pronunciación es regular y el acento siempre cae en la primera sílaba.
El húngaro (magyar) es una lengua urálica de la rama ugria, emparentada de lejos con el finés y el estonio (rama fínica) y, más de cerca, con las pequeñas lenguas janti y mansi del oeste de Siberia. Su llegada a la cuenca de los Cárpatos hacia el año 895 lo convierte en la mayor lengua no indoeuropea de Europa, con unos 13 millones de hablantes.
