El twi es la forma literaria más hablada del akan, una lengua kwa de Ghana. Suele dividirse en twi asante (la variedad más grande, hablada en la histórica región ashanti) y twi akuapem (la forma escrita de prestigio usada en buena parte de la primera edición en akan de Ghana).
