El neerlandés es categoría I del FSI porque está a medio camino entre el inglés y el alemán dentro del germánico occidental, así que si sabes algo de inglés reconocerás mucho vocabulario (water/agua, vis/pez, brood/pan). Para un hispanohablante, los retos son el orden de palabras en las subordinadas (verbo al final) y la distinción de género de/het. El flamenco (Vlaams) es la variedad de neerlandés que se habla en el norte de Bélgica.
