El xhosa (isiXhosa) es una lengua bantú nguni y una de las 12 lenguas oficiales de Sudáfrica, con unos 19 millones de hablantes, sobre todo en el Cabo Oriental, el Cabo Occidental y Gauteng. Es la lengua materna de Nelson Mandela. La ortografía la desarrollaron por primera vez misioneros escoceses en Lovedale en el siglo XIX y usa letras latinas estándar sin diacríticos.
