El tongano (lea faka-Tonga) es una lengua polinesia de la familia austronesia, oficial en el Reino de Tonga y hablada por unas 190.000 personas en Tonga, Nueva Zelanda, Australia y Estados Unidos. Está muy emparentada con el niueano y el samoano, y es una de las pocas lenguas monárquicas autóctonas que quedan, usada en la ceremonia de la corte real.
El tongano usa el orden verbo-sujeto-objeto y un sistema ergativo-absolutivo: el sujeto de un verbo transitivo lleva la partícula ‘e (Na‘e taa‘i ‘e Sione ‘a Mele «Juan golpeó a María»). Tiene tres vocabularios graduados socialmente: común, cortés (para los jefes) y real (para el monarca). El tongano también distingue el «nosotros» inclusivo del exclusivo y usa pronombres posesivos pospuestos.
