El malayalam (മലയാളം) es una lengua dravídica hablada por unos 38 millones de personas, sobre todo en Kerala y las islas Laquedivas, además de una gran diáspora por el Golfo, el Reino Unido y Estados Unidos. La India lo reconoció como lengua clásica en 2013. Se separó del tamil antiguo entre los siglos IX y XIII y ha absorbido un vocabulario importante del sánscrito, el portugués, el árabe y el inglés.
El malayalam se escribe con una abugida derivada de la escritura grantha, con unas 58 letras de uso cotidiano y una forma famosa por sus trazos redondeados y fluidos, resultado de tallarla con un estilete metálico sobre hojas de palma. Sus letras «chillu» marcan consonantes sin vocal posterior y las letras conjuntas funden los grupos de consonantes. La reforma ortográfica de 1971 simplificó muchas para adaptarlas a la tipografía moderna.
