El cingalés (සිංහල) es una lengua indoaria propia de Sri Lanka, con unos 17 millones de hablantes; su pariente más cercano es el maldivo (dhivehi). Se separó pronto del grueso de las lenguas indoarias, hacia el siglo V a. C., cuando llegó a la isla con colonos arios. Hoy es una de las dos lenguas oficiales de Sri Lanka junto al tamil.
El cingalés tiene una notable división entre el cingalés literario, usado en la escritura formal, las noticias, la religión y la educación, y el cingalés coloquial, usado en la conversación diaria. El literario conserva terminaciones verbales de origen sánscrito, más conjugaciones y un vocabulario más rico, mientras que el coloquial suprime muchas terminaciones y usa formas verbales más sencillas.
