El guaraní (Avañe'ẽ) es una lengua tupí-guaraní de Sudamérica y, junto al español, una de las dos lenguas oficiales de Paraguay. Lo hablan unos 6,5 millones de personas y cerca del 90 % de los paraguayos lo entiende. También tiene comunidades de hablantes en Bolivia (guarayo, chiriguano), el norte de Argentina y el sur de Brasil. Muchas palabras del español rioplatense vienen del guaraní (ñandú, tapir, jaguar).
El guaraní distingue el «nosotros» inclusivo (ñande, «nosotros incluyéndote») del exclusivo (ore, «nosotros sin ti»), usa la armonía nasal —una vocal nasal se propaga por toda la palabra— y marca los sustantivos con prefijos posesivos (che-, nde-, i-...).
