El azerí y el turco son ambos lenguas túrquicas oghuz y comparten un alto grado de inteligibilidad mutua, que suele estimarse en torno al 70-80 % ajustando acento y vocabulario. El azerí conserva más préstamos persas y usa las letras ə, q y x, que el turco no tiene.
