El amárico se escribe con la escritura ge'ez (fidäl, ፊደል), una abugida con 33 consonantes base. Cada consonante tiene siete formas modificadas por la vocal, lo que da 231 signos silábicos de uso habitual. A diferencia de muchas escrituras del mundo, se lee de izquierda a derecha y usa ።፣፤ como signos de puntuación de frase y de cláusula.
