El turcomano (Türkmen dili) es una lengua túrquica oghuz muy emparentada con el turco y el azerí, con unos 7 millones de hablantes, la mayoría en Turkmenistán, con comunidades importantes en Irán (sobre todo en Golestán), Afganistán, Irak y Rusia. Es la única lengua oficial de Turkmenistán y una de las grandes lenguas vivas más cercanas al antiguo túrquico de Anatolia.
El turcomano ha cambiado de escritura cuatro veces en un siglo: persoárabe hasta los años veinte, un alfabeto latino desde 1928, el cirílico desde 1940 (bajo dominio soviético) y de nuevo un alfabeto latino de 30 letras por decreto presidencial en 1991, finalizado en 1999. Hoy el alfabeto latino es la única forma oficial. Tiene armonía vocálica plena como otras lenguas túrquicas y usa ä, ý, ö, ü y ş entre sus letras distintivas.
