El hindi es categoría III del FSI. La escritura devanagari (हिन्दी) es una abugida fonémica que se aprende sólidamente en unas semanas. La gramática usa el orden sujeto-objeto-verbo, posposiciones en lugar de preposiciones, dos géneros gramaticales y ergatividad escindida en el perfectivo. El hindustani hablado —la lengua cotidiana de gran parte del norte de la India y de Pakistán— es prácticamente común al hindi y al urdu.
