El gaélico escocés (Gàidhlig) es una lengua celta goidélica que llevaron a Escocia colonos irlandeses entre los siglos IV y VI. Hoy lo hablan unas 57.000 personas en Escocia, más varios miles en Nueva Escocia. Está muy emparentado con el irlandés y el manés: quien sabe uno puede leer los otros con esfuerzo, aunque la ortografía y la pronunciación divergen.
El gaélico escocés usa el orden verbo-sujeto-objeto, dos géneros gramaticales, mutaciones de la consonante inicial (la lenición añade una h: bean «mujer» → a bhean «su mujer») y preposiciones que se conjugan según la persona (leam «conmigo», leat «contigo» son palabras únicas). El alfabeto tiene solo 18 letras y la lectura tradicional se apoya en la regla de vocales finas y anchas: «caol ri caol agus leathann ri leathann».
