El osetio (Ирон æвзаг, Iron ævzag) es una lengua irania oriental —emparentada de lejos con el persa y el kurdo— y el único descendiente vivo de las lenguas escito-sármatas que se hablaron por la estepa póntico-caspiana. Lo hablan unas 600.000 personas, repartidas entre Osetia del Norte-Alania (Rusia) y Osetia del Sur.
