El georgiano moderno usa la mjedruli (მხედრული, «de la caballería» o «secular»), un alfabeto de 33 letras desarrollado en el siglo XI. No tiene mayúsculas, aunque existe un estilo moderno de mayúsculas llamado «mtavruli». Dos escrituras anteriores —asomtavruli y nuskhuri— se usan hoy sobre todo en textos eclesiásticos. Las tres escrituras georgianas juntas están reconocidas por la Unesco como patrimonio inmaterial.
El georgiano es una lengua kartvélica sin género gramatical, con siete casos y un complejo sistema verbal ergativo escindido en el que el caso del sujeto depende del tiempo y el aspecto. Los verbos adoptan «screeves» (combinaciones de tiempo/aspecto/modo) que codifican el sujeto y hasta dos objetos mediante prefijos y sufijos. Los grupos consonánticos iniciales pueden ser largos: gvprtskvnis «él nos pela».
