El lituano conserva un número notable de rasgos reconstruidos para el protoindoeuropeo: acento tonal en las sílabas tónicas, siete casos —incluido un vocativo e instrumental productivos—, tres géneros, número dual en los pronombres y (históricamente) en los sustantivos, y muchas raíces cercanas al sánscrito.
