El armenio oriental (Արևելահայերեն) es el estándar de la República de Armenia y de la comunidad armenia de Irán; el armenio occidental (Արեւմտահայերէն) lo habla la mayoría de las comunidades de la diáspora de origen otomano. Ambos comparten el mismo alfabeto pero difieren en la pronunciación, en parte del vocabulario y en las terminaciones verbales.
El alfabeto armenio fue creado por Mesrop Mashtóts hacia el año 405 específicamente para la lengua armenia, con 36 letras originales; más tarde se añadieron otras tres, hasta un total de 39. Es fonémico —cada letra representa un sonido—, así que leer en voz alta resulta predecible una vez aprendes la escritura, algo cómodo para un hispanohablante acostumbrado a una ortografía fonética.
