El tamil (தமிழ்) es una lengua dravídica con unos 83 millones de hablantes, oficial en Tamil Nadu y Puducherry (India), Sri Lanka y Singapur. La India lo reconoció como lengua clásica en 2004: posee la tradición literaria ininterrumpida más larga de cualquier lengua viva de la India, que se remonta a las antologías de la era sangam del siglo III a. C. Además, convive una forma literaria «alta» (centamil) junto a la lengua hablada.
El tamil usa una gramática aglutinante sujeto-objeto-verbo, ocho casos marcados por sufijos y una clara distinción del «nosotros» inclusivo y exclusivo (நாம் nām frente a நாங்கள் nāṅkaḷ). Distingue los sustantivos racionales de los irracionales en lugar de masculino y femenino. Su abugida tiene solo 12 vocales y 18 consonantes, pero las combinaciones producen 247 signos en total: muchos menos que el devanagari o el bengalí, y aun así bastan para escribir todas las sílabas tamiles habituales.
