El bielorruso (беларуская мова) es una lengua eslava oriental, hermana del ruso y del ucraniano. Es léxica y fonológicamente más cercano al ucraniano (se estima en torno al 80 % de vocabulario compartido) y algo menos al ruso. Usa un alfabeto cirílico de 32 letras cuya letra distintiva ў (u corta) no existe ni en ruso ni en ucraniano.
El bielorruso tiene dos normas escritas: la narkamauka, la ortografía oficial reformada en 1933, y la tarashkévitsa (klasyčny pravapis), la ortografía clásica codificada por Branisłaŭ Taraškievič en 1918 y todavía usada por muchas publicaciones de la diáspora e independientes.
