What is Nepali and where is it spoken?

Nepali (नेपाली) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Pahari branch, the official language of Nepal and one of the 22 scheduled languages of India (mainly in Sikkim and Darjeeling). About 32 million people speak it. It is closely related to Hindi but uses a distinct grammar and vocabulary core with heavy Sanskrit influence — Nepalese speakers can read much Hindi text but often find Hindi spoken at speed difficult.

What grammar features does Nepali have?

Nepali has three honorific levels (low respect timī, mid respect tapāī̃, high respect hajūr), two grammatical genders, split ergativity in the past tense (perfective verbs take the agent marker -le), and SOV word order. Verb conjugations agree with the subject in person, number and honorific level. LingoBear lets you see these patterns in real text.
